we can be kind...

she hoped that because he was simple he would be kind; but of course, to be truly kind, one needs wit and imagination...
-oscar wilde

preaching is boring. bad grammar is revolting. pedantry is a turn-off. and when somebody who commits all of these sins invades your private space, by all means, protect your space. there's nothing more delicious than reading a well-crafted rebuttal. that comprises alot of the fun about reading other people's blogs. territorial protection.

but when one comes across a tawdry blog, one that isn't even funny, or whose views may be offensive to you, that is one other reason why you have your own blog. to write something to contradict whatever that other person has written. and try to disprove it. maybe you will be offensive. as offensive as the other person may have been. but in your own space. and you don't have to go shaming that awful writer on your own blog. he has a right to his own space. to say every idiotic thing he can think of. as you have yours. nobody has to remind you of everybody's right to the freedom of speech. we don't need lawyers for that one.

most of blogging's appeal, at least to me, is the expansive freedom one has to be silly, inane, dull, pretentious towards profundity or brilliance, etc. without fearing for one's life, or at least one's imaginary friends' lives. like angels if one is convinced one sees them. one doesn't have an editor, unless one chooses to have one by asking a friend, a wife, a domestic partner, a parent, a conscience, a supernatural being, or an alien. but when people start policing other people's blogs, and intimidating those whom they deem are inferior bloggers, that is one ugly vanity fair. so some of us are better writers than others. live up to your gift. write of better things other than cheap literary pugilism. some of us may have more intelligence than others. show some of yours. be kind. at least, grant the person his privacy.

and let's go back to surfing 101. if you don't like what you're seeing, close the window. if your technical adeptness has brought you to that point where you have forgotten it, let me remind you, that that little x up there on the upper right hand corner does it nice and easy.

remember how quiet the forest will be if only songbirds were allowed to sing...
